Despite opening to mixed reviews, the film continues to draw audiences to theaters. However, due to controversy surrounding certain scenes, Empuraan has undergone re-censorship. The box office performance of L2: Empuraan has been phenomenal. In just four days, it became Mohanlal’s highest-grossing film and entered the all-time top three Malayalam films, surpassing ₹170 crore in gross collections.
However, the film faced backlash as some viewers claimed it hurt Hindu sentiments. In response, actor Mohanlal issued an apology. Following the controversy, the filmmakers opted for a re-censorship, leading to a revised runtime of 177 minutes and 44 seconds—2 minutes and 8 seconds shorter than the original. Key changes include the removal of a two-minute scene depicting the abuse of a pregnant woman. Additionally, the villain’s name, initially set to be changed, will now remain as Balraj Patel instead of Baba Bajrangi. With these modifications, Empuraan continues its impressive run at the box office while addressing concerns raised by certain sections of the audience.
