Suriya’s much-anticipated film Retro, directed by Karthik Subbaraj, hit the big screens with a decent buzz and marked the actor’s career-best opening in Tamil Nadu. However, despite the promising start, the film has stumbled significantly at the box office due to mixed reviews and underwhelming word-of-mouth. While the Day 1 numbers were encouraging in Tamil Nadu, the momentum quickly slowed down from Day 2. The situation worsened with the film witnessing a sharp decline in collections, not just domestically but across all other territories, including the Telugu states. Alarmingly, Retro showed no signs of recovery on Day 3, matching the low numbers of the previous day—a rare scenario for a Suriya-starrer. With just ₹62 crore grossed worldwide over the first three days, and weekend estimates hovering around ₹75 crore, Retro is on a shaky path. At the current pace, the film is likely to finish its run below Suriya’s previous release Kanguva, making it one of the actor’s most disappointing outings in recent years. The film was expected to be a major comeback for Suriya under the stylish direction of Karthik Subbaraj, but unfortunately, Retro appears to be heading toward a box office disaster.
